The journal publishes high-impact manuscripts specific to the understanding and advancement of physics and engineering of biological systems. APL Bioengineering is the new home for the bioengineering and biomedical research communities.

Manuscripts submitted to APL Bioengineering must present at least one of the following two categories of research:

• Fundamental research that significantly advances the understanding of physics and engineering of biological systems
• Translational research that applies physics and engineering principles and methods to significantly advance medicine or enhance human health
