Brain-computer technology moves closer to medical use after major approval in China

The system, developed by Shanghai-based Neuracle Technology, has received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration. It is intended for adults with spinal cord injuries who are partially paralyzed but retain some movement in their upper arms.

Neuracle’s technology combines implanted brain-monitoring electrodes with a robotic glove. The electrodes detect electrical signals associated with a user’s intention to move, while the connected pneumatic glove helps the person grasp and manipulate objects. The system is designed to translate neural activity into physical movement, potentially helping patients regain some functional use of their hands.

The approval also highlights China’s growing ambitions in the rapidly expanding BCI industry. Chinese authorities have identified brain-computer interfaces as a strategically important technology and have supported domestic developers through investment, regulatory initiatives and efforts to improve future reimbursement pathways.

Neuracle is not the only Chinese company attracting attention. Shanghai-based StairMed recently raised 500 million yuan, equivalent to about $72.8 million, to support development of its own implantable BCI technology. Its approach uses thin, flexible electrodes inserted into the brain through a small opening with the assistance of a surgical robot.

The financing round was led by Alibaba Group and included participation from several major investment organizations, reflecting increasing investor confidence in neurotechnology.

Another Chinese developer, Chengdu-based Gestala, has raised 150 million yuan, or approximately $21.6 million, for a different approach to brain-computer communication. Rather than using implanted electrodes, Gestala is developing a non-invasive platform based on ultrasound technology.

Competition in the sector is also intensifying internationally. In the United States, companies including Neuralink, Synchron and Precision Neuroscience are working on systems designed to help people with paralysis communicate with computers or control external devices.

Precision Neuroscience has already received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a flexible BCI device intended for temporary brain mapping during surgery. The company is also developing technology that could allow users with paralysis to operate digital systems through neural signals.

Meanwhile, other neurotechnology companies are exploring applications beyond movement. Science, a company developing technology for vision restoration, recently raised $230 million to advance its PRIMA retinal implant. The device uses a wireless retinal chip together with camera-equipped glasses and has been submitted for regulatory review in the United States and Europe.

China’s approval of Neuracle’s system therefore represents more than a milestone for a single company. It signals that brain-computer interfaces are beginning to move from experimental research toward real-world medical products.

Although questions remain about long-term safety, accessibility and clinical effectiveness, the field is advancing quickly. As investment and regulatory activity increase worldwide, BCIs could become an important new tool for restoring movement, communication and independence to people living with severe neurological injuries.
